Montgomery Park Extension Goes to City Council
Posted November 12, 2024 by Portland Streetcar
The Portland City Council is set Wednesday to consider moving forward the extension of the Portland Streetcar NS Line to Montgomery Park and associated land use changes, marking a key milestone in the project.
The Montgomery Park Area Plan was recently approved by the Planning Commission after work funded by a Transit-Oriented Development Planning grant from the Federal Transit Administration. City Council will take the final step to rezone the district to support mixed-use development along the streetcar alignment.
The streetcar extension will run north along NW 23rd Avenue and one-way on a couplet of new streets on NW Wilson and NW Roosevelt through the former ESCO steel property, turning around on NW 26th Avenue.
The project will seek federal funds to build not just the streetcar line but also new complete streets on NW Wilson and NW Roosevelt, and also a full street rehabilitation of NW 23rd Avenue. Bringing federal dollars to meet these infrastructure needs will yield better pavement, a more connected street grid, more accessible sidewalks, stormwater drainage and other improvements to serve all modes of travel.
The land use changes associated with the project will allow for upwards of 2,000 new housing units and an infusion of economic development in this part of Northwest Portland. Addressing Portland’s housing shortage while catalyzing investment in the central city will bring broad community benefit by planning transportation and land use together for smart growth.
